What’s The Best Sounding Porsche?

It’s always really hard to pick a definitive best when it comes to Porsche. They tend to hit more than they miss with pretty much everything they do.

If I was to ask a group of Porsche enthusiasts which is the best-looking, most fun to drive, or best sounding car, they would probably all give me a completely different set of answers. With surprisingly little overlap. So how do you pick? Honestly, we aren’t sure. But we’ll give it the old college tryout!

We have broken the question down into a few subcategories to help better organize the answer to the question, which is the best sounding: Cup car, Cayman, Carrera, 911 (including all 911s), electric car, track car, and then our best guess at the best sounding Porsche overall. Our answer might take some of you by surprise, so stick with us to find out – “What is the best sounding Porsche”!

Which is the best sounding Porsche Cup Car?

The best sounding Porsche Cup car has to be, without a doubt, the 911 GT3 Cup. The very first model that was released for the Firehawk championship decades ago now still manages to put a smile on your face every time you catch an old rerun of the race or happen upon a video of the event on YouTube. It sounds pretty gosh darn good, doesn’t it?

And it should, the GT3 Cup Car has a beefy 4.0-liter engine with six cylinders capable of making the kind of roar you associate with American racing events. Is it the best sounding Porsche ever? Probably not, it has to be up there in the top two or three, but how does it stand up to the rest of the cars on this list?

And is it even fair to compare the Cup Car to a road car that isn’t even legally allowed to be that loud? Probably not, but who cares, this is our list, not yours! On to the Cayman!

Which is the best sounding Porsche Cayman?

The Porsche Cayman was designed to be a track car. It may have morphed into something much more than that, something you might actually see fairly often driving down the street, but at its very core, in its heart, and in ours, the Porsche Cayman is a race car.

And luckily for us, the Cayman is a race car that can be owned, maintained, and driven by total amateurs. In terms of which Cayman sounds the best, we are going to have to put our money on the GT4. The GT4 is the most recent version of the track-centric Cayman, and it sounds pretty damn loud and pretty damn good.

And it should because it features a 3.8-liter engine that is naturally aspirated. This means it is naturally filled with air because air is forced through it to the combustion chamber by virtue of design, not because of some kind of turbocharger. This means it has a lower, roar-like, sound rather than the high-pitched whine that is often associated with turbochargers.

Which is the best sounding Porsche Carrera?

The best sounding Porsche Carrera is the Carrera GT. Many people would argue that it is also the best Carrera, so it is no surprise that it would also be the best sounding. The Carrera GT has a humongous 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine, which is pretty big!

It can get from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of well over 200. And it sounds awesome on the whole way up to the 200 mark. The GT has a pretty iconic sound because of the place of the engine and the specially-made exhaust it uses. It creates a high-ish pitched raw that sounds aggressive, raw, and powerful.

Which is the best sounding Porsche 911 overall?

It should come as no surprise that our overall best sounding Porsche 911 is the GT3 RS. It’s raw, it’s powerful, it’s punchy. It’s also pretty damn loud (have we said damn too much in this blog post?). The 911 GT3 RS can produce over 500 brake horsepower thanks to its surprisingly powerful 4.0-liter flat-six engine and its gearbox is designed to easily reach and maintain 9000 RPMs.

The GT3 RS is meant to be a track/road car hybrid so it’s no surprise that its transmission is capable of maintaining such intense RPMs. And, of course, it sounds best at the very top end of its revs. Luckily 9000 seems like child’s play for the 911.

Which is the best sounding Porsche electric car?

We are going to include hybrids in this short and sweet category because otherwise, it would just be a competition between the Taycan and the Taycan. Regardless, the winner is the Taycan. Does it count because the sound the Taycan makes is pretty unauthentic? We think so.

The Taycans sound was engineered to be realistic to the car, and all the noises were taken from other Porsches. The Taycan’s sound is pretty cool and deserves a shout-out at the very least. Which is what this is because we can tell you now the Taycan isn’t our winner overall. It’s last place, but it deserves to at least get mentioned because Porsche did a good job synthesizing it.

Which is the best sounding Porsche Track Car?

We are going with an old classic from the early days of Le Mans, the Porsche 356. The 356 has a distinct sound that many Porsche enthusiasts appreciate as it it is generally pretty recognizable by a high-pitched whine and a raspy exhaust. The sound of the Porsche 356 is often described as a “throaty growl” that becomes more aggressive as the engine revs higher. It also has that classic old-school-cool sound that we associate with older sports cars.

What is the best sounding Porsche – our final answer

Which is the absolute best sounding Porsche overall? Honestly, our gut answer is we don’t know, there are so many great choices and it’s near impossible to pick one over the others with much conviction. But, for the sake of this blog post, and to upset as many people as possible by picking a different car than they would, we are going to go with the Carrera GT.

There is just something about that huge, powerful engine and that custom-made exhaust that make such a raw and unfiltered sound that you simply can’t get anywhere else. Let us know in the comments what you think the best sounding Porsche of all time is. Is it the GT, or is it even on our list? Be sure to let us know down below.
