Robert Downey Jr’s Gorgeous 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

Robert Downey Jr Actor and Car Enthusiast

Robert Downey Jr as we all know and love is well renowned for being one of the most flamboyant actors in all of Hollywood. From his appearance in films in his very early days of acting such as Air America in 1990, all the way through to his more recent roles featuring in films like The Avengers and Ironman you can truly say Robert Downey Jr has a very unique charismatic sense of style and personality. What better way for Robert Downey Jr to express his style than through a car and  there could be no better car for him to express that with than the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302.

It is quite easy to understand that this car is so well aligned to his personality that it can almost be seen as a homage to the famous actor himself. Personally as soon as I set eyes on this gorgeous car felt that it was one of the most well put together restorations and upgrades of all time. To me the quality of this build rivals other world famous builds for style, execution and power.

The Right Balance of Updates for a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

The first thing that we noticed when we see a car is obviously the exterior of the car. This body is so eloquently put together and has kept true to it’s very vintage and classic style with the aesthetic that Robert Downey Jr planned for his 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302. Although there is still a very vintage vibe throughout the car they’re still very modern elements which have been implemented and executed perfectly.

What I’m referring to here is the utilization of things such as carbon fiber body panels throughout the entirety of the car. This has contributed to getting it to a very light weight and agile feel especially compared to the steel body used to create the car in the era that it was built in. From what I understand everything except the bare chassis of the car has been modified, enhanced or just generally rebuilt.

Some purist would say that this is unacceptable for a car of such vintage although sources from around the internet state that the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 donor car that was utilized was not in a very good state to begin with. So if anything Robert Downey Jr has done a favor to the vintage car world by restoring this beautiful machine.

Staying true to his elegant styling and persona of the car a PPG khaki yellow paint caresses the newly installed carbon fiber body panels to present a very well thought out theme to the car.

Lastly no car is complete from the exterior without fitting the right shoes to match the body. This 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is no exception. The team from Speedkore has chosen a gorgeous set of HRE wheels and wrapped them in a moderately sticky Michelin pilot sport tyre.

Keeping the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Vintage Interior Aesthetic

There’s not too much to say about the interior of this car other than the minimalist styling and vintage elements throughout the cabin complement the exterior of the body perfectly.

It was an excellent choice on custom gauge cluster, steering wheel and seats with a well thought out and put together interior by California Gabe custom interiors. The choice of materials were executed perfectly as you can see in these beautiful pictures.

Modern Performance in a Classic Mustang

Last but not least it’s crucial to discuss the performance of this magnificent beast. No car is complete without an engine (obviously) as we all know. This is no exception to the rule and it is an absolutely monstrous engine as well.

Putting out a mild at 600 to 800 hp allegedly, the team at Speedkore has ensured that this car has as much go as it does show. How have they achieve this much power you ask? Well it’s through utilizing a different engine from the original engine of course. Not just any particular engine as well, it had to be a Ford engine a 5.0L V8 performance alluminator engine to be precise. To top it off a Roush Performance supercharger kit that has been tuned to a stage 2 has enabled the engine to produce such a power figures.

With the power to weight ratio to rival the best vintage rebuild’s the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 now possesses is a truly magnificent package for the road or track. Not only does it look the part, you can also take on other resto-mod vintage cars that have received similar updates such as the Singer 911 and any other projects that have maintained a similar mantra.

Concluding the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

In conclusion even though this car was restored originally in 2017 for SEMA, I think this car originating from the 1970’s has been restored into what can now be considered a timeless classic.

I hope that this car is not one that just continually sits in the garage but Robert Downey Jr actually takes it out for the occasional drive or every day, I definitely know I would.
