Two men with a vision to create faster cars and an unsatiable passion for motorsports decided that there needed to be a standard. Erhard Melcher and Hans Werner Aufrecht were working on a racing engine in 1960, and while working with Daimler-Benz, they worked from a home garage on the 300 SE racing engine.

Their tweaks on this engine would produce 10 wins in the German Touring Car Championship. From here, they created the AMG name, which stands for Aufrecht Melcher and Großaspach. Grossaspach is the town where Aufrechts house was. A star was born.

Both Aufrecht and Melcher were passionate about motorsport. Their engines proved to be successful, and after leaving Mercedes Benz, they created Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach Ingenieurbüro for testing and design of racing engines.
